What’s all the fuss about zig rigging?

‘Zig Rigging’ ……………..A tactic that should never be overlooked - regardless of your age or experience.

The tactic of zig rigging has undoubtedly become one of the most popular and effective tactics used in modern day Carp fishing; and those of us who turn their nose up at it, or don’t give it a go and definitely missing a trick!

For years we have somehow convinced ourselves that fish only feed on the water’s surface or the lake/river bed, totally neglecting bait or natural food particles that are available to them in mid water. When you sit back and consider this you begin to realise how ridiculous this is……….

When reflecting upon feeding fish in a pond or tank consider whether you would really expect to only see them take food items when on the surface or once settled on the ‘bottom’; of course you wouldn’t.

Now also consider the following:

The likelihood that pressured fish may already show considerable caution when feeding on the surface or bottom having being hooked when eating food items/particles which have been presented there before.
The undeniable fact that fish regularly feast on semi-buoyant water-borne ‘naturals’ which float around in the middle layers of the water – completely ignoring surface or bottom baits!
The reality that fish are far more likely to travel through their environment in the middle layers of the water, moving from one area to another, following scents, searching for food etc (natural or not). In doing this they are of course avoiding debris, weed, snags and other items on the lake bed but can also move freely, with increased confidence when compared to them swimming on the surface when angling pressure is evident.
At many times of the year the warmest and most stable water temperature shown in the water column is actually that of the water within the middle layers. This is due to the different layers’ temperature being affected by dropping water, ground and of course air temperatures; changes which can quickly induce fish to move to another layer – often for days or even weeks on end.
Many of the UK’s top venues have seen huge fish caught every year by the country’s top anglers using Zig Rig tactics; particularly through the spring, summer and later winter seasons.
The last few years has seen virtually all the most successful individual and team anglers using Zig Rig tactics within such events as the UK Carp Cup and the British Carp Angling Championships
Even the most wary, pressured fish that have been watched testing lines that are running into and out of swims have been fooled - by zig-rigged baits that have no horizontal lines running into them!

...And you start to realise why this simple and easy to understand method really is becoming so popular.

This new and exclusive dye enables you to create baits with a totally unique, fish-stimulating colour. Not yellow and not orange, this outstanding gold dye give baits a strong, vivid colour that increases a bait’s attraction potential in all conditions. Its non-soluble properties make it suitable for inclusion in baits that are used on short or long sessions.

Fluoro Gold Bait Dye can be used to colour Hi-Viz Pop Ups or standard bottom baits.

We recommend the following inclusion levels:

Hi-Viz Pop Ups: 30-40g per kg of base mix.

Boilies (standard bottom baits and freebies): 10-20g per kg of base mix.

To increase the concentration of colour in your baits, simply increase the amount of dye added. Molasses Meal is a coarse, moist, natural meal that has been soaked in sugar cane molasses. It has the distinctive black-treacle aroma and a tangy bittersweet, almost liquorice taste. We have been using this fantastic product for a number of years and felt it was finally time to share it with our customers.

After one of our colleagues saw it and started using it for his Mullet fishing word about this product soon spread to a number of anglers around the region. Some of these anglers can be justifiably be classed as the best of the best in their field and have been using bread and bread based products since the 1960s (and before if truth be told) so know a thing or two about it.

Produced from high temperature cooked white bread, Dried Bread Flake is a crispy white ‘crumb’ with significantly larger particles than most other crumb products. However, the fantastic versatility and incredible natural attraction comes from Dried Bread Flake being flake rather than mainly crust. This enables it to take on water very quickly, making it suitable for ‘balling’ onto the lake/river bed before it breaks up or mixing into a sloppy loose feed that will send fish wild in a cloud of tiny bread particles. This of course depends on the amount of water/liquid added.

We have used this product in several applications but have found it incredibly effective as a spod mix ingredient, dispersing to all levels of the water, releasing powerful fish attractors from the mix as it does so.

Wheatgerm has long been recognised as a very valuable component of aquaculture baits and feeds that supports the intestinal flora of fish, especially during the colder months when digestibility is essential for them to gain maximum benefit from the food they consume. Whilst the price of this meal has rocketed in the past few years there is only one reason for this; it has no equal in terms of bulk fish meal. If you're looking to make a genuinely high quality fish meal bait then don't settle for lower quality meals.

LT94 is the genuine article where low temperature fishmeals are concerned. Produced from chilled raw fish, it is treated at low drying temperatures, maintaining more of the nutritional qualities and amino acids, making it far superior to most standard fishmeals. With an oil content of around 11% and a protein content of 72%+ (of which 94% is digestible), LT94 is the first choice of bait manufacturers like CC Moore who will not compromise on the quality of ingredients used in their baits.

Lamlac Milk Powder

This superbly creamy milk powder has been a favourite among experienced bait makers for many years. Made from 60% skimmed milk powder it has a very smooth taste and gently binds mixes without making them hard. It has a protein and oil content of 20-24% so delivers essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals to baits as well as adding a very attractive natural milky taste and aroma.

We recommend Lamlac is included in boilie mixes at up to 100g/kg but care must be taken to ensure the oil content of the mix is not too high. Whilst its inclusion may help the binding of the mix it can also hinder the hardening of the finished bait.

Tip:

By adding 50g/kg Lamlac Milk Powder to a particle or method mix you can create a sweet milky cloud that carries other soluble attractors from your mix through all layers of the water as your bait breaks down. This will help pull fish into your baited area from considerable distances.

CRACKED MAIZE

This coarse meal is shattered French Maize. Particles range from flour to the size of Tares or Hemp Seed. Being white and yellow in colour Cracked Maize is superb for adding to any particle bait to break up the colour and texture, and as we all know, maize is a very effective fish catcher in its own right.

Tip:

Whilst Cracked Maize can obviously be used with French Maize and Flaked Maize, add 20ml/kg Red Venom and enough warm water to cover it to produce a very attractive red maize.

Cracked Maize is very attractive to fish (and cheaply prepared) if left to soak in a hot solution of water, Talin, Corn Sweet Syrup and Liquid Betaine. We recommend adding 2ml Talin, 20ml Corn Sweet Syrup and 15ml Liquid Betaine before the water cools, so the fermentation process can start. This can be left for days or weeks to ferment, but we recommend it be stirred regularly.
