Big Barbel start to fall again

After a prolonged period of dry weather the UK rivers have gradually started to improve following a couple of spells of very welcome autumn rainfall. This has finally helped our river anglers get back on the banks with some confidence that the improved water levels will increase the likelihood of Barbel, Chub and other remaining species getting their heads down to feed.

We are very glad to say that this seems to have happened.

Firstly we heard from Watford-based Stuart Court who recently opened his autumn account. Stuart told us: ‘Things have been really tough on the rivers this summer but hopefully this 13lb barbel will be the start of a better run of conditions and hopefully a few fish over the coming weeks.’

‘It was caught from the River Lodden using 2 x 15mm Meteor boilies wrapped in Meteor paste with a p.v.a. bag of mixed sized pellets which included Amino Green 365, Betaine HNV, Cantax 365, Marine Amino and Shrimp pellets. All the pellets were coated in the excellent Meteor Liquid Additive and left to dry for a couple of days so they take on the colour and flavour to match the Meteor hookbaits.’

Next, we received a report from Stewart Moss who also broke the news of a recent Barbel success:

‘I made the most of the mild spell with this handsome 13lb 11oz fish from a tributary of the River Thames. Fishing a short after-work evening session, the fish took a CC Moore’s 15mm Meteor Boilie, wrapped in the same flavor paste and fished with a mesh bag of Meteor 10mm boilies and matching 6mm pellets.’

‘This was all fished on a Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hook on a short Stripteaze hooklength, with a 2oz lead and a double length of ESP Anchor Rig Tube, with a sliding in-line Olivette above to help pin everything down. I also used one of the new Drennan Martin Bowler Specialist Barbel 1.75lb rods, and ESP Syncro mainline. I’m especially looking forward to the colder part of the winter to come as the Chub have been finding the Meteor irresistible - I’ve been catching lots on the Barbel tackle, even catching the same 4lb Chub in the same spot on the same set-up three trips running – showing how they just can’t leave it alone!
