How To Boost Your XXX Whites – Mark Pitchers

Super boosting hookbaits has become quite a personal touch within the carp angling fraternity, with our personal favourite additives and flavours that give our hookbaits that special, unique touch. There is no doubt why many anglers do it, first and foremost, it gives your hookbait that alternative, potent appeal which no doubt on many waters can bring those important bites quicker, especially when fishing over a large amount of background feed, that pepped hookbait will stand out from the crowd and will no doubt often be one of the first baits to be taken.

Other than offering the carp a boosted, highly stimulating hookbait, boosting your hookbaits to meet your personal needs offers you the chance to fish completely different, unique baits to most others on the lake. Creating that hookbait that has the custom appeal takes some experimenting; each bait will work well with varying levels of liquid or additive. One of the great aspects about boosting your own baits is the satisfaction you get when you have caught on one, this doesn’t necessarily mean making them from scratch, but taking a pot of readymade hookbaits and giving them a twist with a few added extras.

Mark Pitchers is never one to rest on his laurels and despite being unwilling; we managed to gain his tried and tested hookbait combo to share in this feature. Mark has been using the Odyssey XXX to great effect this season, so to perfectly compliment his loosefeed, his first port of call has been the matching white hookbaits. It doesn’t stop there, to give that all-important twist, Mark adds a light coating of Liquid G.L.M Extract to give them that shiny, glossy look. The hookbaits will take on a sticky nature, allowing other ingredients to effectively stick to them. He then adds a small amount of G.L.M powder and Garlic powder to give them a super potent, crusty finish that oozes fishy attraction around the hookbait. Once complete, Mark leaves the baits to settle among the attraction of the powdered additives, allowing them to form a neat, highly attractive crust over a period of weeks.

1.Take a pot of Odyssey XXX Whites.

2. Give them a glaze with Liquid GLM Extract.

3. Shake to ensure that they are all coated.

4. Add a teaspoon of GLM Powder.

5. The hook baits should be coated nicely.

6. Finish them off with a teaspoon of Garlic Powder.

7. Sprinkle the powder evenly.

8. Before shaking to leave a potent, ultra attractive hook bait.

If after a week, the baits are still quite sticky, Mark tops up with a small amount of powder, which will once again cling effectively to the hookbaits. This deadly combination has seen Mark bank some incredible fish of late, including the pristine Silver Common from the notoriously tricky Elson’s lake at Stanwick Lakes. Mark will fish these hookbaits on his trusty hinged- stiff rig set- up over the top of Odyssey XXX and Hempseed. The potent finish not only drastically improves the pulling power of these fantastic hookbaits, but also creates a slightly duller off- white tone to them, something that Mark feels is important at the back end of the season when the fish have been pressured on highly visual baits. Not only are these hookbaits suited to the fishy Odyssey XXX, but they work incredibly well over particles and a scattering of boilies.
